What are Pop-Under Ads? Pop-under and pop-up ads are advertisements that appear in a new window upon a webpage load. While pop-up windows load over a webpage, pop-under windows load underneath the page - creating a non-intrusive, but highly effective advertising medium. As a result, pop-under ads are considered more-user friendly, less obtrusive and convert better higher than pop-up ads. |
On-Site or On-Network Pop-under campaigns can be delivered either on an affiliate's website or through an ad-network. Ad-networks enable advertisers to syndicate ads through their network of websites - allowing the advertiser to target specific demographics and categories. Advertisers are able to buy banner or pop-under impressions either by the 1,000 (CPM: cost per thousand) or by the click (CPC: cost per click). Affiliates are then able to have eBay creatives and pop-unders served throughout the web to targeted traffic!

Targeted Traffic, Targeted Creatives Nearly one-billion items were listed on eBay in 2003 - so whatever the website and whomever its users, eBay has relevant products? the key is targeting users with relevant creatives and advertisements. Whether through ad-networks on their own websites, affiliates are able to place distinct eBay creatives or on specific pages or sites. With eBay's new pop-under creatives (click to access eBay pop-under ads) and the Editor Kit (click to access the eBay Editor Kit), affiliates can target specific audiences with specific products or categories - resulting in strong conversion rates and eBay commissions! |
Set a Frequency Cap Most ad-networks allow advertisers to set frequency caps - The maximum number impressions each visitor is shown an advertisement. Setting a frequency cap for network-purchased advertisements (including pop-unders and banners) is cost-effective. For pop-unders and rich media advertisements, a standard frequency cap is 24 hours (once per day, per user). With banners, frequency caps should be less restrictive, limiting impressions by minutes or hours. |
Be User-Friendly If done inappropriately or intrusively, pop-under or rich-media advertising can be aggravating for users and results in unhappy visitors, affiliates, and website owners. Consequently, it is important that pop-under campaigns are user-friendly:
? Target relevant websites and traffic with appropriate eBay creatives
? Implement pop-under frequency caps
? Use pop-under advertisements rather than pop-ups |
Test & Analyze Whether your ads are surfaced on your own website or through an ad-network, the key to successful pop-under advertising is analysis and testing. Use the reporting functionalities provided by Commission Junction and the ad-networks to study the following performances:
? Impressions, click-through rates, and conversion rates
? Frequency cap effectiveness (too restrictive or too loose?)
? Creative performance (which creatives perform best in which positions?)
By collecting and studying your data, you can create your own best practices - after all, each affiliate is unique! |
Adhere to eBay Policies eBay prohibits affiliates from forcing clicks or cookies - meaning a user must click through the pop-under or banner for the affiliate cookie to drop (specifically, this is the CJ QKSV cookie). As such, affiliates are not allowed to pop-up or pop-under an eBay.com URL; instead, the pop-ups must contain eBay creatives (click to access eBay pop-under ads) or Editor Kits (click to access the eBay Editor Kit). This policy protects the efforts of our affiliates by ensuring every affiliate is compensated appropriately. |
